In memoriam
We remember them by name
نذكرهم بالاسم
The medics who ran toward the wounded. The journalists who carried the story out. The teachers who kept the lamps lit. And the children, who were doing nothing at all except being children.
This page holds the people this archive has been able to write out in full. It is a small number set against the record, and the smallness is part of what it records.
Gaza, December 2023
“If I must die,
you must live
to tell my story.”
Refaat Alareer — professor, poet, editor of Gaza Writes Back — was killed by an Israeli airstrike on 6 December 2023. Weeks earlier he had written a poem asking that, if he died, a child of Gaza would make a white kite and fly it, “and let it be a tale.”

And the rest of the record
For every person written out on this page there are thousands the record holds only as a row: a name, an age, a date of birth. Every one of them was somebody’s whole world. The registry is where they are, and it is searchable.
We remember them by name, and we continue the work they began.
