Lalzawmi 'Zomi' Frankcom, 43, of Melbourne, was one of seven World Central Kitchen workers killed when Israeli drones struck their convoy in Gaza; an Australian government inquiry found the attack resulted from serious failures of IDF procedures, mistaken identification and errors in decision-making.
Lalzawmi “Zomi” Frankcom, 43, of Melbourne, had traveled the world feeding people after disasters — her work for World Central Kitchen took her to Pakistan, Bangladesh, Haiti and across her native Australia — before joining the charity’s operation in Gaza. On April 1, 2024, after her team unloaded food aid delivered by sea at the charity’s warehouse in Deir al-Balah, Israeli drones struck the convoy’s three vehicles one after another as they drove along a route coordinated with the Israeli military, killing all seven workers: Frankcom, Palestinian driver Saifeddin Issam Ayad Abutaha, Polish aid worker Damian Sobol, American-Canadian Jacob Flickinger, and British security staff John Chapman, James Henderson and James Kirby.
Israel called the strike a “grave mistake” and dismissed two officers. An Australian government investigation led by former defense chief Mark Binskin concluded the attack resulted from “serious failures to follow IDF procedures, mistaken identification and errors in decision-making,” according to the Associated Press. Relatives described Frankcom as an “outstanding human being” who was killed “doing the work she loves delivering food to the people of Gaza.” In February 2026, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he had pressed Israeli President Isaac Herzog for full accountability, including any appropriate criminal charges.
