Yasser Mamdouh El-Fady, 40, a journalist with the Kan'an News Agency, was killed by sniper fire near Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis as Israeli forces besieged the city's largest functioning hospital; UNESCO's Director-General condemned the killing and demanded an investigation.
Yasser Mamdouh El-Fady, 40, was a married journalist with the Kan’an News Agency, working in his home governorate of Khan Younis as Israeli forces tightened their siege of Nasser Hospital in February 2024 — then the largest medical facility still functioning in Gaza, sheltering thousands of displaced people alongside hundreds of patients and medical staff.
On February 11, 2024, El-Fady was killed by sniper fire while covering events near the hospital, according to UNESCO. Its Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, condemned the killing and called for “a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances of his death,” reiterating the obligation of all parties to respect UN Security Council Resolution 2222 on the protection of journalists in conflict. UNESCO recorded him among at least 26 journalists and media workers killed in the line of work in Palestine in the first four months of the war.
