Raed Mushtaha, a father of three, was killed in the February 29, 2024 'flour massacre' in Gaza City; his brother Mohammed found his body on the coastal road and said he was killed by a tank shell fired into the crowd waiting for aid.
Raed Mushtaha went with his brother Mohammed to al-Rashid Street on February 28, 2024, hoping each would bring back a bag of flour for their children and elderly parents; the family had had almost no flour for nearly a hundred days, since the November ceasefire. “Let me go alone,” Mohammed told him, according to Mohammed’s account to +972 Magazine. “He refused and said to me, ‘I am a father, I must feed my children.’”
When the shooting erupted around dawn on February 29, the brothers were separated. Mohammed waited two hours at the meeting point they had agreed on in case they lost each other, then returned to the coastal road and found Raed’s body on the ground; he told +972 his brother had been killed by a tank shell fired into the crowd. At least 112 Palestinians were killed that morning and hundreds more wounded, according to Gaza health officials and UN experts. Raed was the second brother Mohammed Mushtaha lost in the war: another brother, Ahmed, was killed in December 2023 when Israel shelled his home in the Shuja’iya neighborhood.
