Omar Yasser al-Jabri, 13, was critically burned in the August 10, 2024 strike on the al-Taba'een school during dawn prayers — the strike that killed his mother and brother — and died of his wounds three days later.
Omar Yasser al-Jabri, 13, was sheltering with his family at the al-Taba’een school in Gaza City — a temporary home to around 2,400 displaced people — when Israeli missiles struck the school and its prayer room shortly after 5 a.m. on August 10, 2024, as worshippers gathered for dawn prayers. The strike killed his mother and his brother Mahmoud, according to documentation gathered by Airwars, and left Omar with severe burns; photographs shared on social media showed the boy in a hospital bed, his torso and arms covered in bandages, burns visible on his face.
Omar died of his wounds on August 13, three days after the strike. Gaza officials said more than 100 people were killed at the school, one of the deadliest single strikes of the war. The UN Human Rights Office condemned the attack and what it called the increasing frequency of strikes on schools where displaced Palestinians shelter; the Israeli military said it had targeted a Hamas command post inside the school, a claim Hamas denied.
