Journalist killed by drone fire in the tent encampment where she was displaced · c. 1982–2025 · near Hamad Towers, north of Khan Younis
Iman al-Zamili, 43, a journalist displaced from Rafah to a tent in Khan Younis, was killed by Israeli drone fire in the early hours of September 1, 2025, near Hamad Towers; her sister told the MADA Center that a quadcopter drone struck beside her tent and shrapnel hit her head, while other reports said she was shot while collecting drinking water.
Iman al-Zamili was from Rafah. Displaced with her family about a year and a half earlier when Israel ordered the city’s evacuation, she lived in a tent near Hamad Towers, north of Khan Younis, and “continued her media work and activism from within it,” the MADA Center reported. Gaza’s Government Media Office identified her as a journalist for the Palestine News network; MADA, WAFA and the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate describe her as a freelance journalist.
She was killed in the early hours of Monday, September 1, 2025. Her sister Maram told MADA that a quadcopter drone dropped an explosive device beside the tent and Iman was hit in the head by shrapnel, dying shortly after reaching Nasser Hospital; other accounts, including a Qatar Press Center statement, said she was shot by a drone while collecting drinking water. The accounts agree on the essentials — Israeli drone fire, near Hamad Towers, a fatal head wound — while some secondary reports date her death to August 31 or September 2.
Drop Site News, citing Gaza’s Government Media Office, named her among the journalists killed as Israel’s assault intensified that September, and the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate’s Freedoms Committee later counted her among 44 Palestinian journalists killed inside displacement tents during the war, according to Sada News. She was 43.
