Fadwa Touqan
فدوى طوقان
1917–2003
Nablus, Palestine
One of the most celebrated female poets of the Arab world, Touqan gave voice to love, loss, and the Palestinian struggle from her home in Nablus.
Fadwa Touqan was born into a wealthy literary family in Nablus in 1917. She transformed a sheltered upbringing into a life of public poetry, becoming one of the first major Palestinian women writers to publish under her own name. Her work moves between romantic lyric and political testimony, and she remained in Nablus through decades of occupation.
