The national poet of Palestine, Darwish turned exile, memory, and resistance into some of the most widely read Arabic poetry of the modern era.
Mahmoud Darwish was born in the village of al-Birwa in 1941. His family fled to Lebanon during the Nakba and later returned to live as internally displaced Palestinians in Israel. He spent much of his life in exile, moving between Moscow, Cairo, Beirut, Tunis, and Paris, before settling in Ramallah in the 1990s.
His poetry maps the emotional geography of Palestine: the land as body, the checkpoint as wound, the passport as a document of absence. Darwish insisted that poetry was an act of resistance — not as propaganda, but as the preservation of a people’s inner life.
