El-Funoun Palestinian Popular Dance Troupe
فرقة الفنون الشعبية الفلسطينية
A volunteer troupe founded in 1979 that carries Palestinian folk dance and song into staged work, schools, community centers, and new generations of performers.
El-Funoun Palestinian Popular Dance Troupe dates its founding to 1979. Based in al-Bireh, it develops staged works from Arab-Palestinian popular dance and music while training young dancers and taking folk forms into schools and community centers in Palestine and abroad.
The repertoire is not a museum display. Wadi a-Tuffah (1984), the troupe’s first production to tell a story through both dance and song, began with departure from the land and ended with return. El-Funoun says most of its songs and dances drew on folkloric themes and tunes, while some were written for the production and inspired by folklore.
The troupe also helped establish the Popular Art Centre and Palestinian Folklore Day. Its youth ensemble, Bara’em El-Funoun, began in 1986 as a route for teenage dancers to make their own productions and eventually audition for the main company.
