First published in 2006 as The Scar of David and reissued by Bloomsbury to international acclaim, Mornings in Jenin follows the Abulheja family across four generations: from their village of Ein Hod at the Nakba of 1948, through exile in the Jenin refugee camp, the 1967 war, the Sabra and Shatila massacre, and the twin pull of America and home. Through the sisters Amal and Dalia, the novel braids private grief — lost children, broken loves — with the public catastrophes of Palestinian history.
Translated into more than two dozen languages, it became one of the most widely read Palestinian novels ever written, carrying the Nakba’s story to readers far beyond the region and the academy.
About the author
Susan Abulhawa is a Palestinian American novelist, poet, and activist, born to refugees of the 1967 war. She is the founder of Playgrounds for Palestine, an NGO that builds playgrounds for children in the occupied territories and refugee camps. Her other novels include The Blue Between Sky and Water and Against the Loveless World.
