Enter Ghost
Isabella Hammad
An actress returns to Palestine and joins a West Bank production of Hamlet — a novel about family, performance, and the work of making art under occupation.
In Isabella Hammad’s Enter Ghost, actress Sonia Nasir returns to Palestine after years away and becomes part of an Arabic-language production of Hamlet in the West Bank. The premise joins two kinds of return: to a family and a place, and to the rehearsal room where people try to make a shared work under political pressure.
Grove Atlantic’s description begins with Sonia’s visit to her sister in Haifa and follows her into the production. The novel’s central question is therefore not whether art sits outside politics, but how actors continue the practical work of art — casting, rehearsing, gathering, performing — inside Palestinian life.
The book won the Aspen Words Literary Prize and the Encore Award. Those honors belong to the novel; they are not evidence for its historical details, which should be read as fiction rather than documentary testimony.
