Ilan Pappé’s single-volume history tells the story of Palestine from the late Ottoman period to the present as the entangled history of one land and two peoples. Rejecting the diplomatic-history focus of most Israeli historiography, Pappé writes from below: alongside high politics he follows peasants, workers, women, and urban middle classes — Palestinian and Jewish alike — as Zionist settlement, British colonial rule, and the catastrophe of 1948 remake the country. The result places Israel and Palestine in a single analytical frame, treating Zionism as a settler-colonial movement and 1948 as the defining rupture of the modern land.
First published in 2004 and updated in a second edition that covers the collapse of the Oslo process and the second intifada, the book has become a standard university text — one of the most widely taught one-volume histories of the conflict.

Ilan Pappé is an Israeli historian and a leading figure among Israel’s “New Historians.” A professor at the University of Exeter, where he directs the European Centre for Palestine Studies, he is the author of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, The Biggest Prison on Earth, and Ten Myths About Israel.
