Rashid Khalidi frames the past century in Palestine not as a tragic conflict between equals but as a colonial war waged against an indigenous people — one declared in 1917 with the Balfour Declaration and sustained since by successive great powers. Organized around six “declarations of war,” from 1917 through the assaults on Gaza, the book combines archival scholarship with something rarer in academic history: the lived record of the Khalidi family, one of Jerusalem’s oldest, whose members witnessed and participated in the events described.

About the author
Rashid Khalidi is the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University and the author of Palestinian Identity, The Iron Cage, and Brokers of Deceit, among other works. He is a former president of the Middle East Studies Association and editor of the Journal of Palestine Studies.
