Sumud
صمود
Sumud — Arabic for 'steadfastness' or 'steadfast perseverance' — is the Palestinian ethos of remaining on one's land and sustaining identity, community, and ordinary life in the face of dispossession and occupation.
Sumud took shape as an articulated idea after 1967, and especially from the late 1970s, when remaining in Palestine came to be understood as a political act in itself: the refusal to be driven out. Rather than a single program, it describes a disposition — holding on to home, land, and routine when every pressure points toward departure.
Its everyday forms are deliberately ordinary: rebuilding a demolished house, replanting uprooted olive trees, opening the shop under curfew, keeping children in school, holding weddings and funerals with dignity, stitching embroidery, passing down recipes and stories. In this register, endurance is resistance — captured in the phrase often attached to sumud, that for Palestinians ‘to exist is to resist.’
The concept runs deep in Palestinian culture, from the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish to the iconography of the steadfast mother, and it is continually renewed: villagers facing eviction in the Naqab or Masafer Yatta, families remaining in their homes in Gaza, and prisoners’ families alike are described as practicing sumud. It names neither passivity nor resignation, but a long patience joined to the refusal of erasure.
