Kafr Bir'im

Kafr Bir’im sat in the hills of the Upper Galilee, in the Safad district near the Lebanese border. It was a stone-built village ringed by gardens, olive trees, and vineyards, watered by abundant springs; its roughly 700 residents were nearly all Maronite Christians, and agriculture — above all olives and fruit — was their living.

The village surrendered in early November 1948, after Israel’s Operation Hiram swept the Galilee. Days later, its inhabitants were ordered to evacuate and told the measure was temporary; most moved to the neighboring village of Jish and other nearby towns, expecting to come home. When the courts failed to secure their return, the army settled the matter from the air: in September 1953 Israeli planes bombed Kafr Bir’im, and the village was reduced to rubble. The kibbutz of Bar’am and the moshav of Dovev were later established on its lands.

What remains is the church and its bell tower, rising over scattered walls and wild grass, inside what is now a fenced archaeological and tourist site. The displaced community has never accepted the verdict: for decades it has held summer camps in the ruins so that new generations learn the village by name and by stone, and in 2013 descendants established a return presence at the church. Kafr Bir’im, like its twin Iqrit, stands for a return that has been promised, adjudicated, and denied.
