Water to Water: Gaza Renga

Marilyn Hacker and Deema K. Shehabi

Two poets answer one another across distance in a book-length call-and-response shaped by Gaza, exile, and shared witness.

Marilyn Hacker and Palestinian American poet Deema K. Shehabi began exchanging poems in 2009, prompted by the siege of Gaza, and resumed their dialogue by email after October 2023. Their method draws on renga: each poet takes a word, phrase, or image from the piece before it and makes the next response.

Read together, the alternating poems become a sustained conversation rather than two separate sequences. Gaza is present through news and distance, but the exchange keeps returning to homes, minds, memory, and the experience of living in exile while images of destruction arrive through a screen.
