Written in the aftermath of Operation Cast Lead — Israel’s three-week assault on Gaza in the winter of 2008–09 that killed some 1,400 Palestinians — Gaza in Crisis brings together two of the conflict’s most prominent critical voices. Noam Chomsky traces the assault back through decades of US-Israeli rejectionism, while Ilan Pappé situates Gaza within the longer history of Israeli policy toward the Palestinians, from 1948 to the blockade. Both examine the war’s aftermath — the UN fact-finding mission led by Richard Goldstone, the tightening siege, the shifting currents of international opinion — and insist that the fate of Gaza cannot be separated from the question of Palestine as a whole.
An updated and expanded edition followed in 2013; the two authors continued their dialogue in On Palestine (2015).
About the authors
Noam Chomsky, professor emeritus of linguistics at MIT, is one of the world’s most influential critics of US foreign policy; his books on the region include The Fateful Triangle. Ilan Pappé is an Israeli historian at the University of Exeter and the author of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine.
