Gaza: An Inquest into Its Martyrdom

Norman Finkelstein

Finkelstein's prosecutorial inquest, built from the human rights record, into Israel's repeated assaults on Gaza and the blockade that frames them.

The Gaza Strip is among the most densely populated places on earth; more than two-thirds of its people are refugees, and more than half are children. This book is Norman Finkelstein’s inquest into what has been done to it. Working from the human rights record — reports by the United Nations, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, B’Tselem, and Israeli veterans’ groups — Finkelstein examines the major assaults on the Strip and the blockade, in force since 2007, that frames them: Operation Cast Lead (2008–2009) and the Goldstone Report, the 2010 attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, Operation Pillar of Defense (2012), and Operation Protective Edge (2014), which killed more than 2,200 Palestinians, including over 500 children. His method is prosecutorial: official claims are set against the documented evidence, and the documentation, he argues, tells a single story of civilian suffering inflicted with impunity while international institutions looked away. It is a grim, exacting reference work on Gaza’s recent martyrdom.
