Jerusalem, Palestine: one open-licence minute kept beside its source

The first film released directly by this desk begins with a source that can legally travel. The Wikimedia Commons record credits Neollene Films, dates the recording to 11 December 2017 and carries a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported licence. Commons records that a human reviewer confirmed the licence against the original YouTube publication on 18 January 2019.

That record—not a downloaded clip with its history stripped away—is the basis of Source Film 001.

What FALASTEEN published

The site player carries the complete sixty-second source sequence in its original shot order. FALASTEEN placed a four-second source card before it and a closing rights card after it, producing a 70.12-second derivative.

The source picture was transcoded from VP8/WebM to H.264/MP4 for first-party web playback. The source audio was removed. No voice-over, music bed or imitation ambience replaced it.

The absence of sound is an editorial disclosure, not a claim that the Commons original was silent. The source WebM contains audio. Although the file-page licence covers the work, the desk did not independently identify every sound within that track. The more honest release was therefore the picture without borrowed sound.

What the camera shows—and what we do not infer

The sequence moves from a street beside a tall concrete barrier into stone lanes, a children’s football game, a vaulted arcade, an open plaza, the Dome of the Rock and prayer interiors. It ends with children near parked cars and another exterior view of the gold-domed shrine.

The camera also records people whose names and circumstances are not supplied by the source page. This publication does not invent them. It does not assign an exact street to every exterior or identify every interior beyond what the visible record securely carries. A timed written visual record sits below the player so those limits remain checkable.

Why the film lives on the site first

A first-party HTML video player makes no request to YouTube or another video platform. It does not autoplay or loop. Its preload="metadata" declaration asks the browser for metadata rather than the complete film before playback, and the English caption track identifies the silent source and rights cards.

The page then keeps four things in the same reading order as the film:

1. the original author and recording date;
2. the direct Commons source record;
3. the CC BY 3.0 licence; and
4. every material change made by FALASTEEN.

That is the Source Film form: the image can move without its provenance falling off.

The attribution and the limit
