Researchers

Translators
المترجمونArabic into English, English into Arabic, and into the languages this site does not yet speak. A poem translated badly is worse than a poem left in its own language.
Photographers and archivists
المصوّرونImages with their provenance, and help handling the ones families hold — how to scan a print without destroying it, how to record what a photograph is of before the person who knows dies.
Families
العائلاتA village, a name, a house, a key. You hold the part of this record that no institution has and no researcher can reconstruct. It does not need to be written well; it needs to be written down.
What a collaborator agrees to
Five obligations, not five values. A value that does not bind you to anything is decoration; these each cost something in the moment you would rather not pay them.
Every claim carries a source
If you cannot say where something comes from, say that too — an uncertainty stated plainly is publishable, a guess dressed as a fact is not.
Contested ground is named as contested
Where serious sources disagree, both are shown and the disagreement is described. The archive does not resolve a dispute by omitting one side of it.
People are written as people
Names before numbers. No image of a body. No one’s grief used as an argument, including in a good cause.
Mistakes are corrected in public
A page is not quietly swapped. What changed and why is recorded, and the correction is visible to anyone who read the earlier version.
The teller keeps the story
Anything a family gave the archive can be withdrawn by that family, immediately, without a reason and without an argument.
The longer form of all of this is the covenant, which binds the archive as much as it binds you. Nothing here is for sale, no contribution is monetised, and no collaborator is asked for anything but accuracy.
