Bisan Owda
Journalist and filmmaker reporting from Gaza
The Palestinian reporter whose first-person AJ+ report documented civilian life and displacement in Gaza and won both a Peabody and a 2024 News & Documentary Emmy.
Bisan Owda is a Palestinian journalist, activist, and filmmaker whose video and livestream reports from Gaza place the reporter inside the same conditions as the people she interviews. In It’s Bisan from Gaza and I’m Still Alive, made with AJ+, she documented her family’s displacement from Beit Hanoun and reported from a makeshift shelter outside al-Shifa Hospital.
The Peabody Awards credited Owda as reporter and correspondent and honored the series for its persistence under immediate danger. The award profile records that the films reached audiences through social platforms and were also carried by established broadcasters.
The same AJ+ report later won the 2024 News & Documentary Emmy for Outstanding Hard News Feature Story: Short Form. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ winners record names Owda as the reporter; it also names the production team whose work made the finished report possible.
