Birzeit University Digital Palestinian Archive

The Birzeit University Digital Palestinian Archive is the archival programme of a Palestinian national university, and it states its object as documenting the life of Palestinians and their institutions over the past century, from Ottoman times to the present. Launched in 2011, it preserves a wide range of written and audiovisual material — texts, photographs, videos, recordings — donated by individuals, families and popular organizations, with the stated exception of Palestinian Authority documents produced since 1994. The university describes the commitment in national rather than academic terms: Birzeit places its technical and academic resources at the service of the project.

For researchers the collection’s distinguishing feature is its emphasis on the organisational and the domestic together. It is designed, in the university’s phrasing, to assist researchers in understanding Palestinian society and the lives of Palestinians through organizational collections, private family documents, and archival materials collected by individuals — which puts the papers of unions, charitable societies and popular committees in the same catalogue as household correspondence. That combination is rare, and it is what makes the archive usable for social history rather than only for institutional history.

Two access notes, and they are the reason this entry points at the university’s programme page rather than at the archive interface. The university directs researchers to the awraq platform at awraq.birzeit.edu for the documents themselves; at the time of writing that host returns a server error rather than a catalogue, while the programme page — with its sub-pages for Mission and Vision, Archives and Records, Operations and Activities, and the Palestine Archive Website — remains the stable address. Separately, Birzeit runs FADA, the university’s institutional repository, at fada.birzeit.edu; it sits behind a bot-verification layer that blocks automated access but passes for an ordinary browser.

The instability is itself worth recording. Palestinian digital infrastructure is not durable in the way that a national archive in an uninterrupted state is durable, and the outage of a platform is not the same thing as the loss of the material behind it. The working rule for this archive is the working rule for most Palestinian collections: download and cite what you find while it is reachable, and do not assume the link will resolve a year later.
