Wadi al-Hawarith

The people of Wadi al-Hawarith had farmed some 30,000 dunums of the coastal plain for three and a half centuries as tenants when, in 1929, the Jewish National Fund bought the land at a court auction from absentee heirs. Their resistance to eviction became the central land case of Mandate Palestine; the courts ruled against them in 1932 and the first expulsions followed in June 1933. The remaining villagers, 1,330 in 1944/45, left on 15 March 1948.
