Sha'ab

Sha'ab's buildings survived 1948, but that did not mean its people simply remained. The 1945 village statistics estimated 1,740 residents. Israeli forces entered on 18 July; Palestinian fighters retook the village within two days, and it lay between the front lines until Operation Hiram at the end of October. Israeli authorities then blocked most villagers' return and declared Sha'ab a closed military area in 1951. Some returned over time, but most remained refugees inside and outside the country.
