Sabbarin, twenty-eight kilometres from Haifa on the banks of Wadi al-Tin, held 1,700 people and 25,307 dunums, and beside it stood the masonry shaft that fed the Roman high-level aqueduct to Caesarea. It was taken by the Irgun on 12 May 1948. The accounts differ on the killing — Ilan Pappé records seven armed young men executed on the spot, Benny Morris twenty killed in a firefight and an Irgun armoured car firing on those who fled — but agree that more than a hundred who stayed were held behind barbed wire for days and then expelled to Umm al-Fahm.
