Qaqun
قاقون
Qaqun, crowned by a Crusader-Mamluk fortress northwest of Tulkarm, was stormed by the Alexandroni Brigade in June 1948 in one of the bloodiest battles of the war, fought trench-to-trench against Iraqi defenders. Some villagers held on in their homes into 1949; the fortress and the school still stand above its orchards.
