Huj, on the northern edge of the Negev, was founded in the early nineteenth century when the governor of Gaza gave the land away free and built a police post to draw settlers to it. Many Zionist officials counted the village friendly; the Negev Brigade ordered its people out on 31 May 1948 all the same, and Benny Morris records that they were expelled westward and their houses looted and blown up. Their appeal to return that September was refused.
