Dayr Tarif

Dayr Tarif — the Roman-era Bethariph — stood on a mound over a Roman site three kilometers east of Lydda airport, 1,750 people farming citrus and grain from a great number of artesian wells. A Jewish aircraft bombed it on 14 April 1948; it changed hands twice during Operation Dani in July, an Arab Legion counterattack driving the first Israeli units out. The school building is now a stable.
