Aqir — the Roman Accaron, and to al-Maqdisi in the tenth century a big village with a large mosque whose people baked a particular bread — held 2,480 people, two mosques, two shrines and two schools. The Giv'ati Brigade surrounded it on 5 May 1948, took eight villagers hostage over a weapons search, and occupied it the next day; the thirty or so who stayed were expelled within weeks. Small houses remain among cypress and cactus at Qiryat Eqron.
