'Alma stood in the heart of Upper Galilee ten kilometres from Safad, four kilometres from the Lebanese border, with a mosque, a school shared with al-Rihaniyya and 750 dunums of olives — the largest area under olives in the Safad subdistrict. Israeli units reached it on 30 October 1948, in the later stages of Operation Hiram, the day after the massacres at Safsaf and Jish six kilometres away. Its people had largely stayed put and had offered no resistance; Benny Morris records that they were uprooted and expelled all the same.
