Al-Sumayriyya

Al-Sumayriyya stood on a sandstone hill six kilometres from Acre, below the historic aqueducts of al-Kabri, its 760 people growing citrus, melons, sesame and wheat. The Carmeli Brigade attacked it on the morning of 14 May 1948 in Operation Ben-Ami. Morris writes that the eastern side was deliberately left open so the Arabs could escape; 'Arif al-'Arif writes that the village fell after heavy fighting in which all its young defenders died when their ammunition ran out. Two weeks later the New York Times printed a photograph of the wreckage left by Jewish demolition squads.
