Al-Khalisa

Al-Khalisa was a commercial village of 1,840 people on the northwestern edge of the Hula plain, twenty-eight kilometres from Safad, founded by the al-Ghawarina Bedouin and grown into a market town on the road to the Lebanese and Syrian borders. On 11 May 1948 the Haganah refused its request for an agreement; Safad fell the same day and the village emptied. Qiryat Shemona was built on the site in 1950. The school, the Mandate offices and the mosque and minaret still stand, abandoned.
