Abu Zurayq

Abu Zurayq lay in the northern foothills of the bilad al-rawha', the fragrant country, twenty-four kilometres from Haifa, with a mosque, a boys' school and 550 people who had kept cordial relations with the neighbouring kibbutz of HaZore'a. The Palmach took it on 12 April 1948, held fifteen men and about 200 women and children, and expelled the women and children towards Jenin. Filastin reported that thirty houses were blown up, five of them still occupied. A resident of HaZore'a, Eliezer Bauer, recorded that most of the captured men were killed; his account was condemned at the kibbutz council.
